Weighing the Pros and Cons of Private Elementary Schools

Advantage of preschool education

One of the first big decisions a parent must make for their young child is where to send them to elementary school. Parents often go back and forth between private versus public schools, weighing the benefits of both to make the best decision for their child. This is certainly not an easy decision to make, and parents should carefully look at the pros and cons of each and think about which type of environment their child would thrive in. Think private elementary school is the best choice? It may be, but consider the following advantages and disadvantages before choosing:

Advantages of Private Schools

There are many benefits to a private school education. First of all, private elementary schools often times have smaller class sizes than public schools, so students get more individualized attention from their teacher. They also tend to have have better and more up-to-date resources than public schools. Since parents are paying extra for their children to go there, private institutions provide their students with good quality books, materials, facilities and even computers. Other benefits of private schools include studying specialized topics, a more challenging curriculum and stricter graduation requirements.

Disadvantages of Private Schools

Private elementary schools have a lot to offer parents and their young children, but there are also some potential drawbacks. Perhaps the most obvious is that parents are required to pay tuition in order for their children to attend a private school, whereas public schools are paid for by taxes. While they are expensive, some schools offer private school scholarships. Students who meet certain requirements are eligible to apply for private school scholarships and can potentially receive a major discount on their tuition. That said, private school scholarships aren’t greatly abundant, and very few offer elementary school financial aid packages. Other potential disadvantages of private schools are that teachers are not always required to hold a teaching degree, students must pass an entrance exam to be admitted and students may have to travel far to go to school everyday.

There are many factors to take into consideration when deciding between private and public schools. Thinking about some of the factors listed above can help parents make an informed decision about where to send their child to school.
